Wright State University’s Department of Public Safety received the 2023 Outstanding Unit Award.
This past year, the Department of Public Safety has had over 12,000 positive community connections and hosted over 80 training opportunities for over 1,000 people on various topics such as scams, sexual assault awareness, alcohol and drug awareness, and Run, Hide, Fight training.
The department’s staff have been involved in a variety of notable events over the past year including regularly attending talks hosted by the Wright State University Black Student Union; hosting a Know Your Rights panel discussion; participating in Raidersgiving and orientations and open house events for new and future students; and organizing the annual No-Shave November fundraiser to support the Raider Food Pantry.
In addition, the Department of Public Safety has participated in several events with the Child Development Center such as Trunk or Treat, a mitten drive, an Easter egg hunt, Touch a Cruiser and Read Across America.
“The Department of Public Safety works together to embody their mission of protecting anyone who attends, visits or works at Wright State University,” said Gary Neal Jr., executive board member of the Black Student Union. “This protection isn’t just a reactive approach when something goes wrong. It is a proactive, ongoing service to maintain peace across campus.”
The Department of Public Safety continues to change the lives of students through student employment and internships.
The department’s exemplary service to the community during several major incidents over the past year — including responding to the death of an employee, a kitchen fire in an apartment building, two power outages in the residential communities and a fire in a residence hall — is a testament to its staff’s exceptional professionalism.
The Department of Public Safety also received a 2023 Campus Safety Grant, which will enhance the physical security of Wright State’s campuses.
“The Wright State University Department of Public Safety is an exemplary organization and is dedicated to the health and safety of the community — not only today but for many years to come,” said Benjamin Lootens, parking and transportation support services specialist.
